Many people use fireplaces
or wood stoves to heat their homes during the cold winter months.
Unfortunately, they can usually only heat the room they are in, not
the entire home.
If you want to heat the entire home you will need to install a
fireplace fan. A fireplace fan will actually circulate the air
throughout the home by increasing the amount of warm air that enters
the room. Other fans can be installed which move the air to other
areas of the home. You can increase the efficiency of a fireplace by
5 – 10% with the addition of a fireplace fan.
Placing a Fireplace Fan in Your Fireplace
Natural gas and electric fireplace usually will come with an
optional fan kit. If there is an electricity source near the firebox
these fan kits can be easily installed.
Advantages of Fireplace Fans
In a gas burning fireplace an exhaust fan can ensure a constant flow
of gas which releases warm air into the room. You can actually
reduce your heating costs with the addition of a fireplace fan.
These fans operate almost silently, pushing airflow into the room
and preventing a build up of heat under the mantle. Fireplace fans
can be easily installed and removed and cost almost nothing to
operate. During a power outage you can run a fireplace fan to
provide emergency heat to your home.
Additional Information about Fireplace Fans
In order to install the fireplace fan there must be adequate room
and an electrical outlet. Less than four watts of electrical power
will be used by the fan itself. To make using the fan comfortable in
a variety of weather and room conditions you may want to consider
purchasing a fan with variable speeds. This will allow you to better
regulate the amount of heat entering the room.
